South Coast Dive Sites – Unawatuna
The south coast offers relaxed diving with a mixture of reefs, rocky outcrops and wrecks. Conditions are ideal for beginner courses, fun diving and underwater photography.
Visibility varies depending on season and weather, but marine life is consistently good and the sites are close to shore, keeping boat journeys short.

SS Rangoon — classic wreck
- Depth: 30–32 m (Adv/Deep)
- Viz: ~10–20 m

Galle outer reefs
- Depth: 10–20 m

Beginner-friendly
Goda Gala
One of the area’s most popular reef dives, with large rock formations covered in coral and reef life.
Expect:
- schools of snapper and fusiliers
- moray eels
- lionfish
- nudibranchs
- occasional turtles
Napoleon Reef
A colourful reef system with sloping coral gardens and plenty of small marine life.
A great site for relaxed diving and long bottom times.
Common sightings include:
- blue-spotted rays
- pufferfish
- shrimp and crabs
- schooling reef fish
Ralagala
A deeper rocky site with swim-throughs, overhangs and stronger currents on some days.
This is often one of the more exciting dives on the south coast when conditions are good.
Best for:
- advanced divers
- experienced fun divers
East Coast Dive Sites – Nilaveli & Trincomalee
The east coast comes alive during the season from roughly May to September, when calm seas and excellent visibility create some of the best diving conditions in Sri Lanka.
The diving here feels very different from the south coast:
- clearer water
- larger reef systems
- dramatic rock formations
- vibrant marine life
This is also the best area in Sri Lanka for combining diving with snorkelling, beach stays and whale watching.
Nilaveli & Trincomalee highlight sites
Swami Rock (Temple Reef)
Dramatic underwater cliffs below the Koneswaram Temple; 10–25m; frequent turtle and ray sightings.
Irakkakandy Reef
Soft corals, schooling snappers and reef fish; 10–18m; light currents.
Navy Museum
Small inshore wreck (Navy gunboat); 12–20m; ideal for training or photography.
Bus Station
An artificial reef of old buses at 17-20m. An unforgettable dive.
